Beginnings and loss collide

This year on Australia Day Thomas Keneally, who wrote a comprehensive history of early Australian settlement, spoke of the ``enduring pain January 26, 1788, brought to indigenous people across the nation''.

For many in the Aboriginal community Australia Day has come to be known as Survival or Invasion Day.

While Keneally has argued in the past against the celebration of Australia Day because of the devastating impact and effect of the arrival of white settlement in Australia caused Aboriginal people, he now accepts Australia Day stands for both new beginnings and loss.
